My name, over and over and over. You know when you look at a word too many times and suddenly it looks like it’s spelled wrong? That happened to me.
And some fun wordplay. This reminded me of my long-forgotten fascination with calligraphy. I never got very far with it because I think the Roman alphabet is not very aesthetically appealing, but I could look at Japanese or Arabic calligraphy all day, despite not knowing what it means. Interesting how there is a calligraphic tradition in every literate society – I think there’s a very deep pleasure in melding words with images.
I’ll start with one that probably shouldn’t count for any credit:
It was one of those situations where I thought I’d had a great idea, then realized halfway through that I was only parroting something I’d seen before and my tricky brain had told me it was my own. Douglas Hofstatder, the brilliant author of Godel, Escher, Bach, loves to play calligraphic games like this, and this was his idea. Sorry, Doug.
Here’s a detail, in case the jpeg isn’t clear enough:
So here’s one of mine that is slightly less inspired:
I liked how the d could serve as a flag or goalpost at the top.
And two versions of the same idea, using different fonts:
I like how the different fonts give a very different feel to the same idea.
